Mortal Shell

If you’re the type who likes to have plastic boxes on your shelf to showcase your game library, then here’s one more to potentially add to that collection. Mortal Shell is getting a physical release on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Well, sort of. The PC physical version is a code for the Epic Games Store, while the console versions are said to contain actual discs. Additionally, the physical edition includes a fold-out poster and a softback manual that features “never-before-seen concept images and character art.”

Mortal Shell is described as a “dark action-RPG,” and the trailer shows hints of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Diablo III, and Dak Souls. Yes, everyone is probably tired of every new game being compared to Dark Souls at this point, but just look at that slow, deliberate combat in the trailer — you can really feel the weight of those weapons.

The game’s beta was an enormous success, seeing 350,000 players jump into this fantasy action game. It was this success that led to “an eleventh-hour agreement” (according to the press release) that secured the physical edition of the game.

Mortal Shell is coming out digitally on August 18, 2020, on PlayStation Store, Xbox Games Store, and the Epic Games Store. Physical editions are scheduled to land October 2, and it will be out on Steam at some point in 2021 (they’ve struck a limited-time exclusivity deal with Epic).
