Craftopia

At first glance, Craftopia might look like a clone of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. There’s nothing wrong with that, mind you. Breath of the Wild is a phenomenal game, and thus far we haven’t really seen a successful copycat. It would actually be kind of nice to experience something with a similar flavor. (Update: Obviously, this article was originally published before Genshin Impact released.)

Craftopia does seem to possess some of that tasty Breath of the Wild goodness. It certainly has the colorful, cartoony visual style. One of the character outfits looks specifically designed as an homage to Link’s blue getup from BotW, and Craftopia even has a hang-gliding mechanic that looks suspiciously familiar.

But wait, there’s more. Craftopia includes multiplayer. Craftopia also lets you have your own farm. It gives you the option build machinery to aid you is your farming. It also features what looks like a Pokémon-style animal-catching mechanic. It also features hoverboards, helicopters, and tanks.

According to a development post on Steam, the game’s creators were wondering what would happen if they took all of their favorite elements of other video games and put them into a single game. They created this list of features:

  • Chop trees and mine stones as in sandbox games
  • Explore the world as in open-world games
  • Fight the hunger as in survival games
  • Cultivate and harvest as in farming games
  • Collect loot in dungeons as in hack-and-slash games
  • Automate activities as in factory management sims
  • Hunt monsters and creatures as in hunting action games
  • Cast magical spells as in fantasy RPGs
Craftopia

The game is currently in Early Access, so I understand these features to be “Wouldn’t it be nice?” rather than what players can expect from the current version of the game. Still, this sounds like everything I would possibly want from a game like this.

How does Craftopia fit so much into one game? I have no idea, but I can’t wait to try it out.
