Shantae GBC

The Shantae series first appeared on Game Boy Color late enough in the GBC’s lifespan that it could have easily been lost to time. And it sort of did disappear for a while, only to reemerge eight years later with a follow-up, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge for DSi in 2010. The series has only grown from there, seeing releases and re-releases across several consoles.

In fact, I recently tried to play the whole series, which required at least two different consoles to pull off (most of the series was retrospectively added to the PS4’s digital library, but it’s hard to find the first one on anything that isn’t a Nintendo handheld). However, these games will soon be available in physical form on one console.

Yes, Nintendo Switch owners are in for a treat, as the original two games in the series, Shantae and Shantea: Risky’s Revenge, are getting physical editions on Nintendo’s console thanks to Limited Run Games. In the past, Limited Run has handled physical Switch versions of Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, and Shantae and the Seven Sirens, so the addition of the first two games will complete the collection.

Each game will run you $29.99, though you can also upgrade to the physical edition for $64.99 per game.

On top of that, Limited Run is selling steelbooks for Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse and Shantae: Half-Genie Hero (for $14.99 a piece), which means you can have the full set in lovely steelbook cases. They also seem to be re-listing Half-Genie Hero for anyone who missed it previously. And, if that’s not good enough, they’re manufacturing their own Game Boy Color cartridges of the first game.

Shantae fans are surely going to find themselves with lighter wallets for sure, as this is a ton of very cool stuff. Pre-orders open September 11, 2020, and will be available for a month only. The games themselves will ship sometime after that.

If you’re a Switch owner who’s been wanting to experience the Shantae series from the very beginning, your big chance has finally arrived.
