The Long Dark

Anyone who knows me at all knows that I absolutely love The Long Dark. I have never been one to shy away from extolling the virtue of this indie survival sim. The Long Dark is (currently) my top survival game (although Among Trees is making a push toward that top spot).

My first copy of The Long Dark was on PS4, and I subsequently bought a second copy when I was trying to find games that my shoddy laptop could run (it thankfully could handle The Long Dark, though not perfectly). My third copy came courtesy of the Game Pass for Xbox One S. Now I own my fourth copy, which will more than likely be my final version (unless they somehow get the game running on mobile).

The Long Dark

Unlike so many Switch ports, The Long Dark runs as smooth as butter, and it’s an experience that loses absolutely nothing when it’s nestled in my grasp as I play it while on the toilet. There is some noticeable (albeit minor) pop-in from time to time, and not even at long distances, but this is far from a deal-breaker. The frame rate, as best as my non-Digital Foundry eyes can tell, is stable also. And thankfully, all of the content seems to be intact and up to date.

At the end of a long day, surviving the frozen post-apocalyptic tundra of the Canadian wilderness never felt as cozy as it does within the warmth of a freshly drawn, piping-hot bath. I am beginning to see a bathroom motif taking shape here…

I cannot recommend the Switch version of The Long Dark enough, although I have probably reached my nadir with all this potty talk. And speaking of…
