Genshin Impact

If you’ve been playing Genshin Impact casually over the past week, you might have missed the fact that there’s a Battle Pass. You have to be pretty deep into the game before you even unlock it, and I’ve not seen a lot of marketing behind the pass specifically. I played for several hours before I was even aware the Battle Pass existed.

Now, I tend to enjoy Battle Passes and seasonal game content (despite the fact that it also stresses me out), but Genshin Impact handles their pass in sort of a strange way. It can be a little bit confusing, to be honest.

So here’s a complete guide to Genshin Impact‘s Battle Pass. Hopefully it will help you to be fully informed before you decide on making a purchase or not.

How long is the current season in Genshin Impact?

Genshin Impact

I haven’t seen Ganshin Impact‘s Battle Pass referred to as a “season” officially, but I’m using that wording because that’s what so many of the other Battle Passes out there do. Also, I should point out that there are still quite a few unknowns when it comes to predicting what future passes might look like, or what their schedule might be.

That said, the current period started when the game launched (September 28, 2020) and it looks like the end date is November 10. That’s a period of just over six weeks, so I’m guessing future passes will follow a similar timeline (though we can’t yet be certain).

How do you unlock Genshin Impact‘s Battle Pass?

Genshin Impact

You must reach Adventure Rank 20 before the Battle Pass is unlocked. The option simply appears in your menu once you reach Adventure Rank 20. (note that this is your Adventure Rank and not your character level).

Note that you’re automatically enrolled in the free tier, but there are additional tiers that you can buy into.

Either way, you have 50 levels of rewards to grind through. For the record, these levels are independent of your Adventure Rank or your character levels, so now you have one more thing to think about leveling in Genshin Impact. If you like to grind, like I do, then that’s maybe a cool thing. If you hate grinding, though, the pass is going to seem kind of tedious.

What are the differences between tiers?

Genshin Impact

There are three tiers in total: Sojourner’s Battle Pass, Gnostic Hymn, and Gnostic Chorus.

Sojourner’s Battle Pass is free. You will get rewarded every time you level up the pass at this rank, but you won’t get the premium-level rewards (more on those later).

The second tier is called Gnostic Hymn, and it costs $9.99 (US). It includes everything in the Sojourner’s Battle Pass, plus additional premium-level rewards for every single level of Battle Pass advancement.

The top tier is called Gnostic Chorus, and this one costs $19.99 (US). It grants you everything in the lower tiers, plus five Fragile Resin and the “Travel Notes – Catch the Wind” namecard style. On top of that, it automatically advances you ten levels in the pass.

If you progress the Battle Pass by several ranks before upgrading, any of the rewards you missed will be available. So if you level the pass to 6, then upgrade to Gnostic Hymn, you will get the first 6 levels of premium rewards immediately. Beyond that, you will get rewarded every time you progress the pass another level.

Upgrading to Gnostic Chorus increases your level by 10. So if you are level 6 when you upgrade to Gnostic Chorus, you will advance to level 16 immediately.

How do you progress in Genshin Impact‘s Battle Pass?

Genshin Impact

Up to this point, Genshin Impact‘s Battle Pass seems pretty similar to passes from other games. The way you progress the pass, however, is where it sets itself apart. And not really in a good way, I would say, but I’ll save my opinions for the final section of this guide.

In Genshin Impact, you only level up your Battle Pass by doing specific pass-related tasks. Your Battle Pass quest menu features three tabs, one for daily quests, one for weekly quests, and one for quests across the entire pass period.

The daily quests are typically pretty easy, like log in or collect ten ore. The weekly quests are a bit more challenging but still doable. The BP period quests are as follows:

  • Use a total of 5,500 Original Resin
  • Clear Spiral Abyss challenge 8-3
  • Make a total of 50 wishes

This means you’re limited in how much you can level up the pass in any given day or week based on which of the tasks you are able to complete.

What are the Genshin Impact Battle Pass Rewards?

Genshin Impact

Alright, so let’s talk about the goodies!

The main event here comes at level 30, when you unlock your choice of weapon. Note that this only comes with the Gnostic tiers. Free players won’t get one of these.

You can choose one of the items below at rank 30:

  • The Black Sword
  • Serpent Spine (greatsword)
  • Solar Pearl (magical relic)
  • The Viridescent Hunt (bow)
  • Deathmatch (polearm)

These are all four-star weapons, so I guess just pick the one you think you need the most. I’m eyeballing the Deathmatch myself, as I have four-star weaponry in every other category at this point.

Is the Genshin Impact Battle Pass worth it?

Genshin Impact

So this brings us to the ultimate point of this guide. Should you spend money on the Battle Pass, or should you skip it? Well, that’s a matter of opinion, but let’s look closer at the rewards to figure out if they justify the cost.

I bought the Gnostic Chorus tier for $19.99 for the sake of this article. That said, I don’t think the extra ten levels justify the $10 (especially if you have no interest in writing a beefy guide like this one). Ten bucks is a steep price to pay for those extra levels, especially when you don’t get any additional Fate, Primogems, or Genesis Crystals (on top of the ones you earn for leveling up the pass). This will get you the level-30 rewards faster, but it just doesn’t seem worth the price.

As for the Gnostic Hymn, we really have to dig into some numbers to determine the true value.

When you add all of this up, here is what you’re getting for 50 levels of BP ranking in the free tier:

  • Adventurer’s Experience (x27)
  • Hero’s Wit (x36)
  • Mystic Enhancement Ore (x96)
  • 720,00 Mora
  • Acquaint Fate (x5)

Now here’s what you get on top of that if you upgrade to the Gnostic Hymn tier:

  • Hero’s Wit (x126)
  • Mystic Enhancement Ore (x258)
  • 2,160,000 Mora
  • Intertwined Fate (x5)
  • 680 Primogems
  • Talent pages of your choosing (x45)
  • One four-star weapon

That’s a decent amount of stuff, but you do need to grind through 50 levels of daily and weekly chores to get all of it. If you’re not going to put in a ton of work, this is not going to be worth the effort. Unlike similar Battle Passes (think Red Dead Online or Modern Warfare), you don’t get BP experience for doing other things in the game. You have to focus on specific quests in order to earn it.

On top of that, almost all of this stuff is for reducing the grind of leveling up your weapons and characters. So you’re grinding to reduce the grind, basically. That’s kind of weird (though these items will make your grind easier, and it is kind of nice to have alternative ways to earn this stuff simpy for the sake of avoiding repetition).

If you’re really into wishes, this Battle Pass won’t get you much. With the five additional Fate and 680 Primogems, you don’t even have enough to make ten wishes.

Here’s the bottom line: the Gnostic Chorus is a waste of money, and I say that as someone who bought it. The Gnostic Hymn is a decent spend if you care about leveling up weapons and characters a lot. Plus, that extra two million Mora will come in handy later in the game (check out my complete Genshin Impact currency guide for more on that). If you’re just in it for the wishes, though, you’re better off just buying $10 worth of Genesis Crystals.

I really would like to see a better Battle Pass next time around. It’s kind of strange that there’s not a lot of Primogems attached to the BP, and it would have been lovely to tack on a timed exclusive character or some exclusive cosmetic items to make the grind feel more worth it. Hopefully we see a better pass after this one expires.

In the meantime, I’ve got some serious grinding to do!
