Mortal Shell - Rotten Autumn

Mortal Shell is a fantastic Soulslike that really seems to get what makes Dark Souls great. In fact, we put Mortal Shell on our list of Soulslike games that you should play if you’re craving a bit more Souls action.

Seemingly out of nowhere (to be fair, the official Mortal Shell Twitter account dropped a hint yesterday), Mortal Shell just received the free Rotten Autumn update, which gives you some more options for the look of your Shell. (If you aren’t familiar, Shells are human corpses that you basically possess and run around inside of.) Rotten Autumn brings new color options for your Shell, and let me tell you, some of them are pretty freaky.

There are ten new cosmetic Shell options in the game. If you want to change the look of your shell, you’ll have to visit the game’s talking frog, Gorf, and he’ll puke all over you to give you a colorful or creepy (or both) new look. You will, of course, need to complete a brand new quest first.

Also, there’s new boss music by black metal group Rotting Christ. The music will have to be downloaded separately if you want to apply it, but it’s free.

As an additional seasonal bonus, some of the enemies will be wearing Jack-o’-lanterns on their heads

And if all that isn’t quite enough, the game finally got a really powerful photo mode, which is something I think it really, really needed. Thank you, Cold Symmetry!

I feel like anyone who enjoys the dark, muddy, bleak world of Mortal Shell is probably also really into Halloween, but I’m sure there are people who just want to enjoy the vanilla game experience. If you’re one of those people, you can turn off the seasonal content in the options menu.

Mortal Shell isn’t the first game to get a Halloween update, and we’re certain it won’t be the last. However, I love all this Halloween content, so the more of it the better. I just hope I have time to enjoy all of it!
