Mortal Shell: How to Unlock the New Rotten Autumn Shell Colorways (Shades)

Mortal Shell just launched its Rotten Autumn event, which adds new colorways (called Shades) for your Shells. Of course, unlocking these colorways isn’t exactly straightforward, and Mortal Shell is nothing if not obtuse when it comes to explaining things like this. (I don’t say this as a complaint, as this is actually part of the game’s charm, in my opinion.)

Before you can change colorways, you need to do a “quest.” I put the word quest in quotes there because this isn’t really a quest so much as a random sequence of things to do that you’re supposed to figure out on your own.

Now, I didn’t figure this out on my own; I actually found a post on reddit that gave me the gist. However, there’s a lot left out in this reddit post, so I thought it would be helpful to fill in some of the details.

Once you have the Rotten Autumn update installed, you’ll need to visit Gorf, the talking frog. He should now have some options for feeding him food. You’ll need to feed him some food, then play the lute, and he’ll puke onto you to change your colorway.

You can find Roasted Rat and Rotten Food on various enemies in the game as a fairly common drop. You can also purchase Roasted Rat from Vlas for 100 Tar. The Rotten Gourd is a bit rarer, but here’s a guide to finding some.

Also, you can change back into the default shade by feeding Gorf the same items you fed him to grant you the Shade you’re currently wearing (so if you fed him five Roasted Rat to acquire a shade, feed him five more Roasted Rat to return to the default Shade).

Also, the Shells lying in the crypt (where you switch out Shells) will always be visible as the default Shade, but whichever Shade you have equipped will persist when active, even if you switch Shells.
