Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was a fantasy RPG that came out way back in 2012. This comes from a brilliant group of big-name fantasy creators, including R.A. Salvatore, Todd McFarlane, and Ken Rolston (the latter worked on both The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion).

At one point during development, it was intended to be an MMORPG, so you can definitely see some MMO DNA in the game, but that idea was later scrapped for a more open-world style RPG, drawing obvious comparisons to The Elder Scrolls.

As you may have guessed, Kingdoms of Amalur ended up being a really lovable role-playing video game, with majestic locales and a quirky batch of characters that sort of grows on you as the story progresses.

What might surprise you, however, is that it didn’t seem to make a huge, fantasy-style crater when it landed. Perhaps this is because it launched just a few months after The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which caused it to be overlooked by much of its target audience. Or perhaps it’s because of a slew of strange development decisions that made it difficult for the game to gain a real foothold. Whatever the reason, Kingdoms of Amalur didn’t get the sort of attention that something of this scale — and this pedigree — deserved.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning

However, over time, it became something of a cult classic, beloved by those who did end up picking it up. Just last year, it was given a fresh lease on life, with Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. And finally, this magical piece of gaming history is coming to Nintendo Switch.

Yes, THQ Nordic announced today that Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning is coming to Nintendo Switch on March 21, 2021. Like the previous versions, this includes all of the DLC from the original game.

This isn’t the end of Amalur’s story, though. The Fatesworn expansion is due out later this year.

This is far from the first time Kingdoms of Amalur has launched, but it’s actually the first time it’s been on a handheld console. So now you can take the game wherever you go (which, considering the COVID-19 lockdowns are still a thing for many of us, might not be farther than the toilet).
