Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

When Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity first came out, I was anticipating a DLC announcement to follow shortly. Well, the game’s been out for almost three months now, and we’re finally getting some details about upcoming additions to the game.

Content in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity seems to be progressing at a drip-fed rate, with a couple new weapons arriving in May. Based on the Lucky Ladle pre-order bonus, I’m not expecting much from May’s offerings here. The first substantial content release is coming in June, and the second is due in November, a full year after the game’s initial launch.

To put this in perspective, if you want new characters in the game, you have to wait until June (seven months after the game’s launch), and if you want new stages, you have to wait until November (a full year after the game’s launch).

Now, most of the details about this season of content come from a single frame of a trailer released at today’s Nintendo Direct. It was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it announcement, so I’ve included all the details below.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Expansion Pass

The Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Expansion Pass will cost $19.99. Here’s what it includes:

Purchase Bonus (Available May 28, 2021)

  • Newly added weapon for Link
  • Newly added costume for Link

Wave 1 (Available June, 2021)

  • Expanded roster
  • Newly added weapon types
  • New challenges in the Royal Ancient Lab
  • Newly added challenging enemies

Wave 2 (Available November, 2021)

  • New character vignettes
  • Newly added stages
  • Expanded roster
  • New battle skills for existing characters

This probably goes without saying, but you do have to own Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity to access this content.

Now, I actually really enjoyed the double-stuffed version of Hyrule Warriors that came out for Nintendo Switch back in 2018. Part of the appeal was how friggin’ beefy that game was (due to already having multiple years of DLC support by the time it came to Switch). Age of Calamity was a bit harder for me to get into because it felt so sparse in comparison.

This Expansion Pass brings the game closer to its predecessor, which is good, but I’m not sure it’s going to be enough to bring skeptical fans like myself back into the fold. Especially with the Switch release of Skyward Sword happening this year. I know where I’ll be going for my 2021 Zelda fix.
