For fans of the Prince of Persia series, the announcement that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was getting a remake came as something of a mixed blessing. On the one hand, The Sands of Time is a beloved classic, and getting to re-experience it on new consoles (or experience it for the first time) is an exciting opportunity. On the other hand, Ubisoft’s recent history with the series hasn’t exactly been stellar.
Yesterday, Prince of Persia fans experienced another heartache, as Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake was delayed again. This comes after the game already had its release window moved from January to March.
Ubisoft announced the delay in an image shared on the official Prince of Persia Twitter account. The image has text that reads:
Hello Prince of Persia Fans!
Since announcing Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake in September, we saw an outpouring of feedback from you on this beloved franchise. It is your passion and support that is driving our development teams to make the best game possible. With that said, we have made the decision to shift the release for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake to a later date. This extra development time will enable our teams to deliver a remake that feels fresh while remaining faithful to the original.
We understand the update might come as a surprise and we will continue to keep you posted on the process of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. In the meantime, we want to tank you all for your ongoing support.

We are excited to put this game in your hands, as we retell the story of the Prince and Farrah in a reimagined 11th century Persia. However, 2020 has been a year like no other. Today we wanted to let you know that we are taking additional time to work on the game. With that, the release date for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has been moved to March 18, 2021. We belive this is the right call to ensure we will deliver a game you will enjoy.

Now, game delays are kind of both good news and bad news. The bad news is that we have to wait longer for something we’re excited about playing. The good news is that games are generally in better shape when they’re given extra time in the cooker. I mean, one only has to look at Cyberpunk 2077 to see an example of a game that would have benefited from further delays, as much as that would have upset the fan base.
So here’s hoping we still see Sands of Time Remake in 2021. It was one of our most anticipated games of this year, after all. But if it’s pushed into next year, we hope the extra dev time will make this an incredibly memorable experience.
