Bravely Default 2 choose death

Right before Bravely Default II‘s first boss battle, you’re contacted by the Wind Crystal. The Wind Crystal tells you that you’re only alive thanks to its intervention, and from there, it gives you a choice. You can keep on living, or you can choose death’s sweet embrace.

From there, the Wind Crystal goes quiet, and a timer appears on your screen. If you choose life, you must walk towards the light. If you choose death, all you have to do is let the timer run out.

I was immediately intrigued by this question. Obviously, I wanted to keep living so that I could play through the game, but I also wanted to know what would happen if I didn’t. The Wind Crystal choice seemed like the perfect setup for a bad ending, and I love a good bad ending. Since I had saved just moments before, I decided to go ahead and let the clock run down.

Sadly, I must tell you that nothing interesting or exciting happens if you decide to give up. Once the timer hits zero, you’ll see a “Game Over” screen. It’s not even a special screen; it’s the basic one you’ll see anytime you die in the game.

I was a little disappointed that Bravely Default II presented you with an odd question, only to not do anything if you decided to choose death. Even a snippet of dialogue would have made things a lot more intriguing!

With that said, I haven’t beat the game just yet, and I suspect that question will crop up again at some point. Bravely Default II was one of my most anticipated games of 2021, and I’m very excited to see where the story goes.
