Song in the Smoke

After playing the exquisite Valheim, which managed to breath fresh air into the survival crafting genre, it’s going to be difficult to go back to just any old survival game. But the fact that Song in the Smoke is launching for Sony’s VR headset does give it something of a leg up.

Song in the Smoke is a new survival game from 17-BIT that’s supposedly arriving later this year. And while the survival genre blew up on PC and eventually flooded the console market, those looking for a solid survival experience for PlayStation VR have been left in the lurch (with a few notable exceptions). So Song in the Smoke attempts to fill a notable gap in the VR headset’s lineup.

And although we don’t yet have a whole lot of concrete information to go off, the announcement trailer presents a striking visual style and shows off some VR-friendly game mechanics. The survival gameplay should look familiar to anyone that’s played a couple survival games, which is comforting, but the extra level of first-person immersion provided by the VR headset should make the old feel new again.

I’m looking forward to learning more as we get closer to Song in the Smoke‘s mysterious 2021 release date. Of course, I’ll need to be able to survive PlayStation VR for longer than 20 minutes at a time without losing my lunch to enjoy this. But that’s perhaps a song for another time.
