Yalroc Island is an action-RPG that draws heavy influence from classics such as The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask and Landstalker. In it, you have three days to save the land from a mighty flood. Like Majora’s Mask, you also have the ability to rewind time and start the cycle over, keeping some of the things you’ve earned in previous cycles.
The art style has an almost Minecraft-y look, with voxel-based level design, and the whole thing has a PSOne-era look to it, which I really dig.
But what really caught my attention was the music in this trailer:
I’m a sucker for a good 8-bit flute sound, so the main melody caught my ear. But there’s also a gallop-y rhythm to the tune, which really drives the composition, and the bells backing the main melody are a nice touch. For some reason, the overall feel of this brings to mind the Wild Arms intro music (which is one of the greatest video game music compositions of the PSOne era).
It sounds like Yalroc Island could be getting a Kickstarter soon, so I’ll keep my eye on this and report back if/when that goes live.
You can get more details at the official Yalroc Island website.
