EDF: World Brothers

The latest game in the EDF franchise is here. Earth Defense Force: World Brothers is a voxelated twist on everyone’s favorite sci-fi, B-movie-style, alien-shootin’ video game series. It’s silly, absurd, and completely chaotic.

You can play the game online with up to four players, but there’s also a local co-op option for two players. This will present the game in a side-by-side splitscreen view so both players can see the action. And this actually works way better than you might expect. I’m not always a fan of side-by-side splitscreen, but EDF uses it really well. I never felt like I had a problem with visibility (which can oftentimes be the case). Then again, I sat pretty close to the TV for my big co-op session.

What’s really wild about EDF: World Brothers‘ splitscreen co-op is that it lets each player command a team of four units. Yes, this means you’ll have eight characters out on the battlefield at a time, doubling the game’s chaos. It’s actually pretty incredible.

On top of that, this allows you to earn armor points on eight characters at a time instead of just four (you only earn armor points on characters who are on the field — no passive gain for banked characters).

Each level of the game typically allows you to rescue three brothers (or sisters) in single-player, and rescuing them will add them to your roster of playable characters. This still functions the same in co-op (three rescuable characters per level), but either player can perform the rescue. No matter who rescues the characters, they will still be added to the roster (unless they’re a double, in which case they’ll level up that character’s skill points).

But best of all, it’s just a ton of fun to play this way. Buildings are blowing apart all around you. Ants are exploding in bursts of green and purple goo. There’s fire everywhere. It’s absolutely glorious. You can, of course, damage each other, so you’ll have to be careful, but this comes with the benefit of being able to heal and revive each other as well.

Oh, and two players can’t use the same character at the same time, but thankfully there are palette-swap versions of characters that will allow you to get around this limitation.

EDF: World Brothers

If you end up picking up EDF: World Brothers for some stupid, hilarious, alien-guts-spilling fun, you should definitely try to convince a friend to join you for some couch co-op. This feels like it was how the game was meant to be played.
