Final Fantasy XIV - Magitek Armor

Note: If you’re curious about which mounts you could be unlocking during the first phase of your Final Fantasy XIV journey, check out my mount roadmap, which details every mount you can obtain in A Realm Reborn. If you’re just wanting more info about the Magitek Armor specifically, then you’re in the right place. Keep reading to learn more.

If you’re a longtime Final Fantasy player, then seeing the Magitek Armor clanking around Eorzea is quite a treat. The Magitek was introduced way back in Final Fantasy VI (originally released as Final Fantasy III in the States), so it brings a nostalgic tear to many players’ eyes to see it become such a big part of Final Fantasy XIV‘s world.

You can earn your own Magitek Armor mount to go stomping around Eorzea with. While there are some online guides for unlocking the Magitek Armor already, I can’t find any that are sufficiently detailed, and I’ve seen a lot of players digging through forums to find answers to their Magitek questions. So I’m going to walk you through the process step-by-step to make sure you don’t miss out on this incredible mount.

Most other guides will simply tell you that you earn the Magitek Armor by completing the main story of A Realm Reborn. More specifically, you earn it when you turn in the quest The Ultimate Weapon.

This comes at the very end of the original base game’s main scenario quest line, though more story quests were added afterward to lead into the Heavensward expansion. So while this is technically the ending of the base game, it’s also kind of not?

The last two major instances you’ll need to complete are Castrum Meridanum and The Praetorium, which pretty much happen back to back. These are both eight-person raid dungeons, and each one takes a good amount of time. If you’re going into The Praetorium for the first time, expect this to take between 90 minutes and two hours.

I’m not going to walk you through the entire raid here; if you find yourself in The Praetorium with a decent group, they should be more than happy to walk you through it. Final Fantasy XIV players seem to be pretty chill and helpful, I’ve found. Just follow your team members and this shouldn’t be too confusing (just make sure you’re on the lifts when your team members are using them so you don’t get left behind).

Once you’ve completed The Praetorium, you’ll head back to the Waking Sands and talk to Minfilia to turn in the quest. She will give you an item called the Armor Identification Key.

Don’t get rid of this item; you need it to unlock the Magitek Armor. If you’re reading this and you’ve already gotten rid of the key for whatever reason, you can visit a Calamity Salvager to see if they’ll dig it up for you.

Now, all you have to do now is navigate to your inventory and use the Armor Identification Key item. Once you’ve used it, the Magitek Armor mount should show up in your list of mounts.

To access this list, go to the Character section of your main menu, and navigate to the Mount Guide option.

Selecting this should bring up a list of your current mounts. Just navigate to the Magitek Armor option and select it to summon the mount.

Note that you can also add it to your hotbar if you’d like to, which makes summoning and unsummoning a lot easier.

Oh, and did you know that the Magitek Armor can fly? Yes, all mounts can fly in Final Fantasy XIV. When you complete the main scenario (the same quest that unlocks the Magitek Armor), you also unlock the ability for your mounts to fly in the A Realm Reborn portion of the world. You’ll have to complete the story in the expansions to unlock flying in additional areas of the game.

And that’s how you unlock the Magitek Armor in Final Fantasy XIV.

Oh, and one last thing… When you’re riding the mount, “Terra’s Theme” from Final Fantasy VI plays, which is one of the best pieces of music in this entire decades-spanning franchise. I’ll leave you with the original song from the SNES game so you can compare it against the new FFXIV arrangement.
