Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut

Today it was announced that Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is set to release for PS4 and PS5 on August 20, 2021, which is only like a month and a half away. The Director’s Cut will include all of the DLC for Ghost of Tsushima, as well as a brand-new expansion that will take Jin Sakai to the new location of Iki Island, featuring all-new content and even additional Trophies to unlock.

The PS5 version will also include the requisite new-gen bells and whistles, such as 4K resolution and all the haptic feedback and adaptive trigger features of the DualSense controller. There will also be some general quality-of-life improvements, and even some extra features like a full Japanese lip-sync option, which was missing from the original version (if you chose to play the game in Japanese instead of American English).

This is great news. There is some bad news, however: This version will not be a free upgrade for owners of the last-gen version.

The breakdown is a little complicated, but it works out like this: If you already own the original PS4 version of Ghost of Tsushima, upgrading to the PS4 Director’s Cut will set you back $19.99 (this is pre-order pricing according to the PlayStation blog, but I don’t anticipate a price change at release). If you own the PS4 version and want to upgrade to the PS5 version, like me, that will cost you $29.99.

If you don’t own any version at all, you can pick up the Director’s Cut for $59.99 for PS4 and $69.99 for PS5. If you buy the Director’s Cut for PS4 at full price and want to then upgrade to the PS5 version down the road, that will run you $9.99 after the fact.

Although I was hoping for a free new-gen upgrade, this seems like it’s probably worth the additional price of entry. I’ve been looking for a reason to jump back into Ghost of Tsushima, and it seems like I’ll soon have one.
