A new RoboCop game is on the horizon, developed by Teyon, the studio behind the clumsy-yet-ambitious-and-mostly-enjoyable Terminator: Resistance, and published by Nacon in association with MGM (who own the RoboCop rights).
RoboCop: Rogue City is some sort of action game set in the universe of the original three movies, two of which were really good. Assuming this is just a continuation of that series, it will be interesting to see if they manage to get Peter Weller (who played the titular Robocop in the first two films), or if they go with Robert John Burke (who replaced Weller in the third film). Or maybe they’ll go budget-friendly and hire someone new.
The premise sounds pretty straightforward, at least according to the synopsis on the game’s Steam page, so it doesn’t sound like Rogue City will stray too far from the source material. And considering MGM is involved, there is hope that we will see a more faithful — or, at the very least, a more polished and cinematic — recreation of the Robocop character and the gonzo Detroit he inhabits. Although the MGM tie might just solely be a matter of legality, since this is a licensed game. It may not be a full-fledged studio collaboration. We’ll see.
Considering the thematic undertones of the original two RoboCop films — especially when contrasted with the mindless action of the third movie — it will be interesting to see what Teyon does with the story. Will they shoot for or the satirical dark humor of the original and its sequel, or will they just make a straightforward shooty-shooty bang-bang game?
Termintor: Resistance‘s story and characters had a lot of nuance, which was a surprising element of that AA title, so I have hopes that they will deliver something in that vein. I’m crossing my fingers that they can mostly — even if not fully — stick the landing on this one.
RoboCop: Rogue City is targeted for 2023, so we have a long ways to go before we see anything of substance from the title. For now, you can check out the teaser trailer below.
