Tribes of Midgard Season 1: The Wolf Saga

I was already excited about the upcoming Tribes of Midgard. This game looks to successfully meld Diablo-style, loot-centric gameplay with deep survival and crafting mechanics, then it tosses in a pinch of tower defense for good measure. On paper, that sounds like a bit much, but when you see it in concept, it looks like the formula is coming together brilliantly.

Oh, and let’s not forget the Norse Mythology inspiration and the breathtakingly gorgeous, almost Breath of the Wild-style art design.

I’m already drooling here… But on top of all of that, Tribes of Midgard will be receiving free seasonal content for players to enjoy. Announced today at Sony’s State of Play, the first season is called The Wolf Saga, and it will arrive when the game officially launches later this month. A brand-new trailer gives us some delectable details.

Tribes of Midgard Season 1: The Wolf Saga

First of all, there will be eight classes available at launch, though only two are available at the start (the other six need to be unlocked). One of those is a ranger, which looks to be exactly what you’d expect for any fantasy ranger class — a powerful bow-user.

Next up, this game features a Rune system, which allows you to apply various power-ups to your character. You can slot multiple Runes at a time to see how their effects stack and complement each other. One Rune specifically mentioned in the trailer is called the Might of Mjolnir, which adds chain lightning to your attacks. The Wolf Saga brings 30 Runes to Tribes of Midgard, and it sounds like more will be added as the game grows.

And then comes the real meat of the season, the seasonal quests. The Wolf Saga has you delving deep into a mysterious lair and taking on a season-specific boss. I think it’s probably safe to say that this boss is a giant wolf, and if you’ve read a lot of Norse Mythology (like I have), you can probably guess who that wolf is (cough, Fenrir, cough).

The Wolf Saga also comes with season-exclusive loot, such as weapons, armor, and “truly mighty companions.” When these companions are mentioned, the trailer shows us a wolf, so it seems like wolves might be season-exclusive pets this time around.

And apparently this is just the beginning for Tribes of Midgard players, as the game has more seasons of content planned for the future.

Tribes of Midgard Season Roadmap

I have to be honest, Tribes of Midgard shot up to the top of my “must-play” list after the incredibly juicy E3 trailer — which, for me, was probably the highlight of the Gearbox presentation this year. Sure, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands sounds fun and everything, but Tribes of Midgard looks like it scratches an entirely different itch… or maybe several different itches at once?

While I’m probably going to have my hands full with the Red Dead Online Blood Money expansion (Half-Glass Gaming readers know how intense I can get about RDO), I can definitely make room for Tribes of Midgard when it launches for PS5, PS4, and PC via Steam on July 27, 2021.
