Rune Fencer Illyia

There’s a lot going on in Rune Fencer Illyia from Nootbox Games, and all of it looks really cool. The game is described as an action-platformer, and it features fun-looking gameplay and detailed pixelated style.

Interestingly, Rune Fencer Illyia mixes classic influences with its own unique style. You might see a little Castlevania and Dark Souls in the game’s level designs here and there, but there’s also a lot of surreal imagery. It’s as gothic as it is dreamlike, and it all meshes quite nicely.

Enemies are especially neat, relying on simple concepts that visually work really well. You’ve got skeletons, tentacle monsters, and even skeletons with tentacles. There are giant knights, a huge buzzard-like creature, and other grotesque monstrosities.

The trailer, which you can check out below, showcases the game’s hack-and-slash combat, as well as its sizeable Metroidvania-esque map. Beyond that, you also get a nice glimpse of the platforming gameplay. It looks like you’ll be able to wall-jump, wall-run, and even ceiling-run! You can also stop time, collect lots of upgrades and items, and ride a huge turtle.

Rune Fencer Illyia is headed to Steam in 2022.
