35MM

35MM originally released on Steam back in 2016, so a console version has been a long time coming. Thankfully, it’s almost here, with a March 2 release on PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. And it comes with a low, low price of $9.99.

From indie developer/publisher Sergey Noskov (Носков Сергей), 35MM is a narrative-driven exploration game — basically a walking simulator with some environmental puzzles to solve. You will play as one of two lone survivors of an epidemic apocalypse, tasked with traveling the Russian wasteland and basically just trying to survive another day.

Noskov has made a career out of delivering more opaque story-driven, puzzle-solving walking sims, with his previous title, the console remake of In Rays of the Light, really catching me off guard. Rays was one of my favorite games from last year, managing to deliver real moments of dread and unease. For a game that I already knew offered no enemies or penalty of death, that is quite an achievement.

As you can imagine, I am looking forward to seeing what 35MM has on offer, as I haven’t played the PC version so I will be going in fresh with the console edition. But based on the new gameplay trailer (which I’ve posted below), I imagine this to be pretty similar to In Rays of the Light, though with a companion in tow this time. I will be interested to see if there is a reliance on tandem puzzle-solving or even more of a conversation dynamic this time around, which was lacking in Rays (since that was a single-character game). I’m not exactly sure if that will translate all that well, given this is an indie Russian developer and voice acting can be rather expensive — saying nothing of translation and regionalization — but I guess I’ll just have to wait and see.

Once again, the console version of 35MM is scheduled to release March 2, 2022, for Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. You can check out the aforementioned gameplay trailer below.
