Horizon Forbidden West - Treasure Chest

Treasure chests are a longtime staple of video games, to the point that few people question their inclusion in any video game, no matter the genre or setting. Sure, Fortnite, I totally believe that there would be random treasure chests spread out across this world! Why wouldn’t there be?

But the thing is, while these are stocked up with loot, the interiors generally don’t look like it. Usually, these are just displayed as empty boxes that maybe have a bright glow emanating from inside them. It sort of makes sense, I suppose, since you’ll really only get a look into these chests after you’ve looted them.

In Horizon Forbidden West, however, it seems like Aloy digs around in each chest and only pulls out the stuff she needs, leaving behind anything she doesn’t. And the chest interiors in this game are excruciatingly detailed.

It’s always fun to take a gander inside to see what sort of trinkets you’ll see. There are a lot of scrolls and empty potion bottles, for example.

And I guess this is evidence that Aloy doesn’t take potion bottles that are already open, which is a smart move. Who knows what sort of germs live on the rims of these things?

Admittedly, I’m not sure why Aloy left some arrows in this one:

Or this one:

And not every chest works with its environment. This one, for example, has grass growing through the bottom:

And this one is mostly covered by leaves:

I’m also not sure these scrolls would survive underwater:

With so many treasure chests in this game, I suppose it was inevitable that interiors would start repeating eventually:

Even so, it’s really cool to see Guerilla Games put this much detail into such a small aspect of their massive game. Horizon Forbidden West is raising the bar for treasure chest interiors, and hopefully other developers take notice.
