Days Gone

I love taking screenshots in video games. I also love sharing my screenshots on social media. I fancy myself a bit of a photog when it comes to capturing what I find makes specific games so special. Thankfully, the Steam Deck makes this process fairly simple, especially if you have Valve’s dedicated Steam app on your phone.

The first step in the process is getting acquainted with how to take screenshots on the Steam Deck itself. This can be a little finnicky at first, but once you work out the muscle memory, you should be able to snap screenshots like a pro and not miss your moment or mess up your composition by pressing one of the two required buttons too early or out of sequence.

So yes, you will need to utilize a two-button prompt in order to take a screenshot. Basically, just hold down the Quick Menu button (the one with the three dots to the right of the Steam Deck screen), and while holding that, press the right bumper; easy-peasy. As long as you have the Quick Menu button held before pressing the right bumper, you won’t trigger the input tied to the right bumper or bring up the quick menu, which is called up by a press and not a hold. Once you snap that shot, a nice little notification pops up letting you know it was successful.

Steam Deck - Media

Now you can use the Steam button on the Deck to pull up the menu, and scroll down to media. From here, you can access your screenshots. Simply click on the desired screenshot and, using the menu, upload it to Steam. Once the screenshot has been uploaded, we can now turn to the Steam phone app.

Simply open up your Steam app on your phone, click on the three vertical lines in the upper left corner to expand the Steam menu, and click on your profile picture. Once your profile is open, simply locate the screenshots menu in the center of the page — click that, and you should see all of your uploaded screenshots.

Steam App

If the screenshot you are looking for isn’t there, repeat the above steps to make sure it has been uploaded correctly.

From here, simply click on the screenshot you want to nab to isolate it, click on it a second time to make it go full screen, and then hold your finger on the screen to bring up the menu to download the image.

One thing to keep in mind is that — at least on my Google Pixel phone — every screenshot seems to download with the same file name, so it will ask you if you want to download this image again if you have already downloaded a screenshot. Simply hit download again, and worry not, it will not overwrite any previous images it thinks has the same file name; this is just a wonky hiccup with the way this all works, I guess.

Steam App - Download Again

Go to your phones image gallery, and under screenshots (again, on the Google Pixel 6 at least) you should see your gorgeous Steam Deck screenshots, waiting to be edited or shared on any social media platform of your choosing.

It is also worth noting that if you have your Facebook and/or Twitter account(s) linked to your Steam account, you can just share them directly from the Steam app if you don’t feel the need to download them to your device.

I will also say that this method is the best way I have found to get screenshots from the Deck to your phone, but if you have a different or easier method, I would love to hear about it in the comments.
