The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was a true masterpiece that rocked the open-world genre to its core. So fans have been champing at the bit for the sequel for some time now. Of course, Zelda games don’t generally get direct sequels, but there are rare exceptions, and Nintendo is making one of those exceptions for Breath of the Wild.

Well, we got some more information today at this morning’s Nintendo Direct. First off, we got a name. This game will be called The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Second, we got a release date: May 12, 2023. That’s still a way out, but at least we have a concrete date so we can mark our calendars and make sure we get a day or two off from work.

One thing that’s kind of neat about all this is that it looks like Nintendo is bringing back the skyworld concept from Skyward Sword. In the new trailer for Tears of the Kingdom, we see a lot of verticality, with Link way up in the clouds, sometimes climbing a cliffside, sometimes free falling. And then we see a giant stone eagle of some sort, which looks like a combination of the paraglider from Breath of the Wild and the Loftwings from Skyward Sword.

If Tears of the Kingdom truly does combine the exploration stylings of BotW with the skyworld of Skyward Sword, then I am all in. 110%, baby.

You can watch the trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom below, but it’s not super long or substantial (aside from showing the stone eagle, which is admittedly pretty awesome).

If you want more Zelda goodness, you might want to check out this fan-made trailer that looks like it belongs on N64. It’s awesome.
