Lucid

As a fan of 2D platformers, I like to keep my eyes peeled for promising upcoming entries in the genre. It’s always cool to play a fun new platformer — it’s even cooler when a game resonates so well with the masses that it’s talked about for a long time after it’s released. Super Mario Bros. 3. Super Meat Boy. Celeste. These games are benchmarks in the genre and, for those of us who loved them, remain completely unforgettable.

That said, while we’ve seen plenty of games take inspiration from both Mario and Meat Boy, Celeste, for all of its acclaim, often remains in its own little bubble. Well, it looks like that may soon change when Lucid from The Matte Black Studio and Apogee Entertainment launches on consoles and PC.

Lucid will feature precision platforming and air-dashing/multi-jumping like we saw in Celeste. The game looks like it’ll offer clever platforming gameplay while mixing in some shooting and slashing action. Per the team behind the game, it’ll also have Metroidvania elements, something that was absent in Celeste, which was a direct influence on this game.

Lucid Game

Visually, Lucid has a dreamy pixelated look, with lots of blues and purples to help create a surreal world. There are also big bosses to large beasts to encounter, though at this time, we’re not sure if they’re hostile or just majestic creatures. In any case, it looks like the game has taken its inspiration from Celeste but is still giving off its own vibe.

We’ve got a ways to go before we get to play Lucid, as the game is due out in 2024. So hang tight, folks! Currently, it’s planned to appear on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
