Scars Above

I love a good third-person, no-nonsense action shooter. Give it a sci-fi coat of paint and you’ve really caught my interest. If the trailer for Scars Above is indicative of what the final game will be, well, I think you can consider me successfully wooed.

Space-shooter-slash-horror games are in vogue right now, so one could be forgiven for glossing over yet another trailer for yet another space shooter. But even amongst the onslaught of wannabe Dead Space successors, Scars Above manages to stand out with its crisp and clean art style and visual aesthetic. It isn’t blindingly bright or colorful, but it also doesn’t gratuitously lurk in murky shadows and claustrophobic metal corridors lit by the red glare of emergency lighting. It reminds me of Returnal by way of Tomb Raider (2013).

Scars Above

I am told that the combat of Scars Above will be challenging, and it will require careful inventory and stamina management in order to survive this hostile world. As Dr. Kate Ward, a member of the SCAR (Sentient Contact Assessment and Response) team, players will be tasked with kicking ass and scientifically taking names, using all manner of firearms and elemental attacks. It also looks like there will be some form of item and equipment crafting.

I think Scars Above is just what the doctor ordered to help cure my fatigue of space-themed, over-the-shoulder third-person action shooters. Hopefully it will also be optimized for the Steam Deck so I can play it from the safety of my bed or while lounging on my couch.

You can download a demo for Scars Above now during Steam’s Next Fest which runs through October 10. If you’re curious but aren’t yet sold on checking out a demo, why not check out the trailer below?
