Trepang2

Trepang2 kind of came out of nowhere, at least for me. I remember thinking, “I never heard of Trepang 1 let alone knew there was going to be a Trepang 2.”

So let’s start by clarifying that the title isn’t Trepang “Two,” but rather Trepang “Squared,” although this doesn’t really go a long ways towards explaining what exactly the title is referring to. Especially since Trepang is also the name of the development studio.

But the game’s title isn’t really the point of my rambling. What it looks to be? Well, that’s where things start to get exciting.

I loved F.E.A.R. back when that was new. It was by far one of the best FPS horror games I had played up to that point, and in a lot of ways it’s still one of the best to this day. The A.I. was intelligent and at times unforgiving. The action was intense and balletic, offering some of the best use of bullet-time in gaming history. And the gore… My God, the gore was so over-the-top that it was a pure dopamine dump. The two follow-ups were also solid, although the narrative started to take bizarre and even morally questionable turns that were kind of silly. But that gameplay? Goodness gracious, that gameplay.

Since F.E.A.R. sort of fizzled out as a series, there really hasn’t been much to deliver that specific formula of tying an impactful single-player horror story to insane bullet-time action with copious amounts of blood and guts strewn about.

In Trepang2, you play as an escaped soldier with a blank-slate mind, imbued with supernatural powers that allow you to slow down time and also completely wreck a fool with a well-placed kick to the groin or by picking up a guy and throwing him at one of his teammates. And when the screen isn’t completely obfuscated by the torrential blood gushing all around you, you can see how slick and impressive it all looks.

Look, the trailer speaks volumes, so you should probably just watch that and enjoy the mayhem and brutal action.

Trepang2 is slated for release 2022, but I guess we’ll just have to wait for more details over the coming months.
