JETT: The Far Shore

A new gameplay trailer for JETT: The Far Shore was shown at Sony’s July 2021 State of Play. Developed by Superbrothers and Pine Scented, and featuring an ethereal, sci-fi-inspired soundtrack from Scntfc, Jett: The Far Shore is an intriguing little indie space exploration game.

I’ve heard this compared to No Man’s Sky, but I don’t think that is an accurate summation. I mean, I realize thatpeople who play games — myself included — have a tendency to use the language of existing games to describe new gaming experiences. But I wouldn’t say this is at all akin to No Man’s Sky on anything deeper than a mere bullet-point surface level. Sure, you do fly a spaceship and explore planets, and you can navigate in first-person perspective on planet surfaces. But the comparisons, at least as far as execution and game mechanics, end there.

The player will take control of the character Mei, and will be tasked with finding a suitable new habitat for whatever Mei’s species is (species was the term used in the trailer; I would have been perfectly fine using the word human). This will entail scouring surfaces of planets and studying the alien flora and fauna.

Okay, that part sounds similar to No Man’s Sky… But unlike NMS, you won’t be endlessly harvesting resources in JETT. Also, combat seems highly de-emphasized here. There will be instances were you might come under attack by hostile alien lifeforms, but it looks like the order of the day is finding the best way to avoid conflict and evade your pursuers rather than destroying them. This appears, at least from what the trailer depicts, to all take place from the seat of your cockpit. The options for interacting with your surroundings while on foot still seem to be mostly undisclosed.

Some of the biggest takeaways for me from this new gameplay trailer are the narrator’s emphasis on motion — using motion to navigate the terrain in your spacecraft — as well as the need to explore and discover. In fact, at one point, the narrator describes JETT as “a laid-back and enjoyable exploratory action adventure set within an intriguing new science fiction cosmos.”

And if that doesn’t sound like a blast to you, well, your head must be up Uranus.

The game is expected to release sometime yet this year for PS4, PS5, and PC via the Epic Games Store. You can get ready for launch by checking out the gameplay trailer for JETT: The Far Shore below.
