13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim

If 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim isn’t currently on your radar, you might need to change that. This stylish hybrid between adventure game and tactical RPG (I’ve heard there are some tower defense elements too) comes from developer Vanillaware, known primarily for Odin Sphere and Dragon’s Crown, and publisher Atlus.

The game isn’t out yet. Well, that’s not technically true. The Japanese version came out last year. But the Western version isn’t out yet, and it’s already sitting at an 87 on Metacritic, making it one of the ten top-rated PS4 games of 2020 (tied with Final Fantasy VII Remake and Doom Eternal).

Siliconera’s Jenni Lada gave it a perfect score, saying, “13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a complicated masterpiece that will leave you taking notes and double-checking its Analysis section…”

Matt S. at Digitally Downloaded also gave is a perfect score, making that claim that “this game stands proudly with the likes of NieR Automata, Persona 4 and Danganronpa as something truly intelligent and meaningful.”

Jade King at Trusted Reviews said, “13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is the best game Vanillaware has ever made.”

And those are just a few of the many, many positive reviews for the game. Clearly, people love it a whole lot.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is coming out on PS4 on September 22, with no immediate plans for release on other consoles or PC. I have a feeling this one will eventually make its way at least to PC, but I obviously can’t confirm this — it’s just a hunch.
