There’s not really much else like the Disgaea series. These grid-based tactical RPGs work as hard as possible to go so far over the top that they end up ramming into a moon somewhere in a distant galaxy. I can’t think of another way to explain these games other than using extreme hyperbole, because the games themselves revel in extreme hyperbole to the point of absurdity.
For example, while similar tactical RPGs (or strategy RPGS, or SRPGs) will cap characters at level 99, Disgaea has traditionally kept its level cap at 9,999. If 99 levels of sheer grinding still isn’t enough for you, Disgaea offers that times 100.
But wait, it’s not done yet. Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny, which has been revealed to be a Nintendo Switch exclusive (in the United States, anyway), is throwing that out the window, bringing the level cap to 99,9999,999. Apparently, max damage tops out somewhere in the quadrillions. I have no idea what to even do with this information. My brain just sort of melted when hearing these numbers announced.
But that’s what Disgaea has always done best. Disgaea 6 seems ridiculous and unnecessary, but it wouldn’t feel like a true Disgaea game if it didn’t. And I’ve always loved this about the series.
So throw these stupidly huge numbers at me. My body is ready (and my brain will just have to catch up, I suppose).
One thing I am a bit skeptical about, however, is the 3D character models. Yes, the old games were reusing sprites ad nauseum, and it was probably time for a visual refresh, but I’ve always loved the 2D sprites of the Disgaea games, even when they look extremely outdated. The cel-shaded new look seems like it works here, though, so this isn’t a hill I’m willing to die on or anything (even in a universe where reincarnation is commonplace). I’m still very much looking forward to Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny, and those 3D character models are just something I’ll have to get used to.
