Moon: Remix RPG Adventure is one of the lost treasures of gaming — outside of Japan, at least. This loveable little “anti-RPG” has been exclusive to Japan since it first came out for Sony PlayStation in 1997.
Last year, the game was ported to the Nintendo Switch in Japan, and finally, in 2020, Moon: Remix RPG Adventure can be played on the Switch in the United States, fully translated and localized in English.
Despite being so elusive, it’s managed to have an impact on the gaming world, inspiring game makers such as Undertale‘s Toby Fox. The game is sort of a deconstruction of an RPG, putting you into the shoes of not the hero, but the one who cleans up the mess that the hero left behind.
If you’ve ever wondered why RPG heroes kill monsters with so little remorse, Moon might be the game for you. In it, you must find the wounded animals left in the wake of the hero’s journey and love them. Yes, you level up in the game by showing love.
