Upcoming 2D RPG Tails of Iron got a new trailer for the Future Games Show during E3 this year. If you haven’t heard of this title and you enjoy games with a rich, hand-drawn art style, this is one to be on the lookout for.
Developed by the UK-based Odd Bug Studio, Tails of Iron features a look very similar to classic fantasy storybooks. It reminded me a bit of Child of Light mixed with the comic book MouseGuard. Though somewhat whimsical, the game’s graphical style is also pretty dark, as you’ll see sword-wielding mice, rats, and other woodland creatures getting all stabby with each other throughout this RPG adventure.
The game’s story revolves around a character named Redgi, the heir to the rat throne. As Redgi, you’re tasked with putting together a group of allies and reclaiming the kingdom from the Frog Clan.
Interestingly, Tails of Iron has an M rating. Publisher United Label describes the game’s combat as brutal and Souls-like, requiring you to perform perfectly timed dodge-rolls and tricky executions. As such, this could be a deceptively tough game. The combination of challenging hack-and-slash RPG mechanics and the bold fantasy world definitely make for an intriguing dichotomy.
Currently, there’s no set release date for Tails of Iron, but we do know that it’s “coming soon” to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
